Our First Year

The farmers market at Latham United Methodist Church officially launched on Tuesday, May 7, 2013 and opened for 21 the next 22 Tuesdays through October 1 from 3:00 until 7:00 p.m.  The volunteers came from the church and community to organize and staff the farmers market with workers.  The farmers came from as close as a couple miles from the church to as far away as Athens and Falkville and Holly Pond and Sand Mountain and many places in between.  The shoppers came from next door to the church to city-wide to adjacent counties to buy the best and freshest, locally grown fruit, meat, cheese, vegetables, flowers, honey, and prepared foods that improved our diets and therefore our health.  Families came with their children who learned a lot about where their food comes from, who grows it, and how it is grown.  They also had a blast at the farm animal petting pen the first week and bouncy room for several of the weeks that followed.

Locally Grown Food Promotion

The Farmers Market at Latham Board plans some exciting new features at next year’s market, including a misting tent on the hot summer afternoons.  We plan to open an early spring market by May, continue with a summer market, and conclude with an early fall market in 2014.  In the meantime, take every opportunity to buy and to eat locally grown food.  Buy fresh.  Buy local.
